for those of you who didnt know, AFI was originally a horror punk band…yeah…way to sell out guys
No, they weren’t. They were a hardcore/streetpunk band. They didn’t even get into the gothic sounding stuff until about 6 years down the road, when half the band’s lineup changed and Jade started writing the music.
Also, there’s nothing that invalidates anyone’s opinion quicker than claims that if a band that formed when a bunch of guys were 15 in high school and didn’t even know how to play their instruments ever grows up, becomes better musicians, has diverse musical interests, and doesn’t want to keep making albums that sound exactly the same because they want to explore new things each time, OMG THEY SOLD OUT.
Srsly, if the definition of “Selling Out” is making music specifically so people will buy it, isn’t that what every self entitled elitist who claims a band are sell outs WANTS to them do? Not make music because it pleases them and is an expression of what they’re thinking/feeling, but instead deliberately make music to please other people (in this case, THEM?)
When I was 7 I wanted to grow up to be Brian May.
When I was 8 I wanted to grow up and be Bob Dylan.
When I was 11 I listened to Kiss and The Beatles and Idolized both Alice cooper and Bruce Springsteen.
When I was 15 I’d spent 8 years in training as a concert guitarist playing Andreas Segovia/Classical and John Fahey./American Primative folk music, but wishing I was playing AC/DC or Adam Ant, or Pink Floyd.
When I was 16 I wanted to be in a street punk band like Operation Ivy (Billie Joe Armstrong and I came up with that epiphany almost simultaneously, LONG LIVE EAST BAY PUNK ROCK)
When I was 17 I was playing Violent Femmes, NIN, Ministry and The Cure on my radio show.
When I was 19 I was heavily into Elvis Costello, Kate Bush and Sting.
When I was 21 I wanted to play guitar in Nine Inch Nails.
When I was 24 it was Stray Cats, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Cherry Poppin’ Daddies and the Brian Setzer Orchestra.
When I was 28 I would’ve been happy playing guitar for either Shirley Manson or Marilyn Manson.
When I was 31 I still wanted to play guitar in Nine Inch Nails.
When I was 32 I wanted to be Green Day’s back up guitarist and/or possess Brody Dalle.
Now I wish I were Matt Bellamy.
I’m such a fucking sell out.

Davey Havok of AFI performing at the Rainbow Ballroom in Fresno, California USA on January 27, 2010. Photo by MiseryXchord. Do not reblog without link/credit.I just got home from the hospital a few days ago, was hospitalized for 8 days and will probably be laid up for awhile, so I’m going to try to queue up our saved themes for next week (yay for fan art and tattoos and merch!)
Catch me up… what’s been up with AFI/Blaqk Audio/Hunter/Adam (yes, I know someone’s engaged ;) while I’ve been gone?
Style Watch: CMYK Gentleman
This guy was too classic. The bright magenta and cyan accents on his camel colored suit was too rad to pass up a photo opportunity. With the gleam of the metallic silver pointed shoes, his outfit reeked his confidence. Right on, man.
…best part, they didn’t know he was Davey Havok until they posted these on their Tumblr. They just thought he was some random stylin’ dude. :D
My mum just asked me why can’t I ever have a crush on a celebrity that looks like a man instead of a woman…
if he looks like a girl… I’m a fucking lesbian.
The women at my physical therapy place thought one of my concert photos of Andy Six was me in makeup, and wanted a copy to hang on their wall o’ patients. Another thought a photo of me was Davey Havok. (Tho afa my mom, she told me Davey looked like a gay satanist) I fail to understand this, as they’re both prettier than me.
In retrospect it probably would have been hilarious to give my PT a photo of Andy and have it hanging there on their office wall with all the injured athletes and ballerinas.
And again, Esper makes me cry. As soon as I wake up.

(Review) Saint Jimmy at the St. James: Davey Havok in “Green Day’s American Idiot” -DOOM! Magazine. ”Everything he knows about the power and charisma of a rock star is poured into this role, and there’s no question he’s having the most fun ever. “- Paula O’Keefe
Davey Havok joins cast of 'American Idiot'
Billie Joe Armstrong will hand over his role in “American Idiot” to another rocker — Davey Havok, lead singer of AFI.
Havok joins the cast of the Broadway musical for a two-week engagement as the evil St. Jimmy on March 1. Armstrong’s 50-show stand as the character ends Feb. 27. AFI toured with Green Day this summer.

Yes, I totally put the wrong watermark on this entire set… they were taken in 2010, really! If you don’t trust me, look at Davey’s hair. You can accurately place when a photo was taken down to a 6 month time period by checking this man’s hairstyle! ;-)
This set, like the Santa Cruz one from a day later, was only online a couple of months, but you can now see the entire set again on DOOM!
